Disciples History Moment for November 10, 2024
Many have been to Washington, DC, the Federal District of Columbia, and have seen the various wonderful monuments, memorials, museums, and magnificent buildings. But, have you seen the places of Disciple history there? There are several.
One is a lesser known memorial to the Signers of the Declaration of Independence near the Vietnam memorial. There you will find inscribed stones of all those who signed the Declaration in 1776. On one you will see the name Thomas Stone, a lawyer in Charles County, VA and cousin to our first Disciples’ leader, Barton W. Stone.
At the Capitol building you will find one of our most famous Disciples who was also one of our US Presidents, James A. Garfield. There you will see a monument to him in front of the Capitol, erected by his comrades of the Society of the Army of the Cumberland in 1887 (after his assassination and death in 1881). President Garfield was an ardent abolitionist and served in the Federal Army of the North as a Major General. If you enter the Capitol rotunda you will see another stature of Garfield. As many of you know, President Garfield was the only President of the US who was an ordained preacher!
Then at Thomas Circle in DC you will find the national church and cathedral of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)—National City Christian Church. Built in 1930, it houses the pew President Garfield and his family occupied when they were members of Vermont Avenue Christian Church prior to the building of National City Christian Church.
So, if you visit our nation’s Capital I encourage you to go visit some of our Disciple history!
Rev. Kevin K. Adams
