Disciples History Moment for November 24, 2024
Higher education has been an important focus for Disciples since the very beginning of our movement. Alexander Campbell and his father, Thomas Campbell, both went to the University of Glasgow in Scotland for their Theological Education. Barton W. Stone attended David Caldwell’s Academy in NC in 1790 and there, as an 18 year old, he studied law, math, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Throughout our history, Disciples have founded institutions of higher learning to educate students and form leaders to make a difference in the world. The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is still committed to higher education for its pastors and supports the education of thousands of students at our fifteen colleges and universities and seven seminaries and divinity houses.
