Ordinary Saints

Ruth 1:1-18

The story of Ruth and Naomi is a parable that teaches us about friendship and an important lesson about being kind to others. The story in the Bible is a pretty ordinary story. There are no miracles, no signs or visions or speaking in tongues. These two ordinary women are as different as can be from each other, and yet they cling together. They journey together, leaving their old lives behind and are suffering together amidst their losses. They become part of God’s story with Ruth’s simple words “where you go I will go; your people shall be my people, your God shall be my God.” With these simple words they are bound together, and their ordinary stories, their ordinary lives, get woven into what God is and wants to do for the entire world. The moral of the Ruth and Naomi story teaches that even our ordinary, everyday, imperfect lives can be used for God’s perfect, extraordinary purposes driven by love.
