Jeremiah 1:4-10

When God calls on you what is your response? In our lectionary text for last Sunday we learn that we can trust in God’s plan. Our calling may involve difficult or seemingly overwhelming tasks. Trusting in God’s sovereign plan and timing is crucial. But Scripture is clear: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Jeremiah’s experience should encourage us to respond positively to God’s invitation. God doesn’t just invite anyone. God knows that no one can do God’s work in the unique way that only you can do the work. If you don’t serve, then no one else is available to serve in the manner only you can serve. Whether it’s a call to serve in ministry, a vocation, a mission, or simply to live out our faith in daily interactions, our only option is to respond with faith and obedience. Remember God’s words to Jeremiah: “Do not be afraid … for I am with you.” God’s presence, provision and power are with us as we step into our callings. Let us listen for the voice of God, trust in the promises of God, and step out with faith in God. God will take care of the rest. God will fulfill the unique purpose in life that awaits us.
