Share to Care

Luke 3:7-18

In our last Sunday’s lectionary text, John the Baptist has very simple guidelines that will help us to recover the joy and simplicity of Christmas. The crowds ask him "What should we do to show people we care?" His response is "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none, and whoever has food must do likewise."

God shared Jesus with the world, and, likewise, Jesus’ life and ministry were marked by acts of sharing and service. He fed the hungry, healed the sick and spent time with the marginalized.

The Bible's Advent and Christmas passages have a thread of justice woven through them. So, the same question is posed to us during this Advent season, "What should we do to show we care?” Do some Christmas giving, only don't limit your giving to the ones gathered around your tree, who give you gifts in return. Give to the least, the lost and the lonely.

As we do so, we follow the example of Jesus himself who ultimately came into this world to share.
